The Unexpected Way of Rising Up

Everybody needs a break from reality. Because sometimes reality is not really fun and it can be downright scary. Thank God there’s anime!

For the past years, text was not equal to cellphones and ray gun was everybody’s weapon. Who could forget the scene of youngsters huddled at 4pm just to watch Filipino-dubbed animes? Everybody knew Pokemon and DragonballZ. Owning something that’s anime especially stuff which are produced by Bandai equated that you were a cool kid on the block. Art class is a time where kids show of their expertise in drawing doujinshi( fan art). Who could forget those days?

Actually no one. Because anime is an unstoppable phenomena that has been wowing audiences for almost decades and it seems to bind us all in his fresh and funky spirit. The Japanese are really born conquerors not just through the art of war but also art on paper. No wonder Japan is such a big economic monster.

Anime is the brainchild of Ozama Tezuka. The debut of anime shortly followed Disney’s works. Disney’s influence was strongly evident in Ozama’s early works. The googly eyes as well as the choice of theme and even the settings mirrored Japan’s admiration for the west. Technically, you could call his works as rip-offs. They were a far cry from Disney’s classical and fantastical creations. That was anime before Astroboy. Astroboy retained the creator’s fascination for googly eyes yet with a whole new exaggeration. Even Astroboy’s costume was something that didn’t exist in Disney. His hair is a trend that echoes in almost every male anime hero. The storyline he involves in something is new and innovative. It was good as it could be to the point that it even received attention from the government ( read: Astroboy as well as Voltes V were banned during the 70’s because of its minute political content.)

Astroboy was very well received but the best was yet to come. The world suddenly became enamored not to mention caught on Pokemon. Pokemon is such a huge success that not only did it maintained a huge fan base for almost ten years, it became a country’s asset making kawaii along side with Sanrio’s Hello Kitty. Otakus(anime fans) would admit that before they went gaga over new anime titles, Pikkachu had already ran electric currents in their then seven or ten year old selves. No one could really be called an otaku without Pokemon.

In the current times, making anime is a piece of cake. Creativity blooms everywhere, opportunities are scattered like porings and the convenience of modern technologies makes it easy for novices to make their own titles. No wonder a lot of companies from Japan would rather favor a pink bunny to endorse their products than have some Hollywood star to do the job. It’s actually how things are done in Japan. Everybody lives the kawaii culture.

Anime is indeed one of Japan’s primary exports. Although Japan can never replace the stellar and not mention racy reputation of the US as the entertainment capital, it has the potential to rival the US comics and cartoon industry. I mean why watch Tom and Jerry when your classmate just brought in a new DVD of Gundam or Death Note? The Japanese indeed are masters in the field of progress. The Japanese archipelago was once barren, war-struck and hopeless. Hiroshima was a scar on Amaterasu’s face. But look at where Japan is now. It’s definitely the seat of the gods.

The Philippines has a lot more than Japan can offer. If Japan has Naruto we have huge yet undiscovered oil sources that could benefit the country. If Japan has Astroboy we have tons of competent, intelligent and talented people. If Japan has Hello Kitty we have untapped natural resources. And finally if Japan has a potential, why can’t we? We just have to look within ourselves. We can be conquerors and we can reclaim our old glory.

Are there any cynics?

Hmmm….we (Cyrus and Claudette) are ready to use are sharringans and rasengans not to mention some newly frosted cakes for some good old smashing time.
